Ulnar neuropathy or nerve dysfunction is a problem with the nerve that travels from the wrist to the shoulder. This condition causes movement or sensation problems in the wrist and hand. This condition is also known as “ulnar nerve neuropathy” or “ulnar nerve dysfunction.”
This type of nerve damage occurs when there is damage to the ulnar nerve, which is near the surface of the body where it crosses the elbow. So, prolonged pressure on the elbow may cause damage. The damage involves destruction of the nerve covering (myelin sheath) or part of the nerve (axon). The most common causes for ulnar neuropathy include direct injury, prolonged external pressure on the nerve, or compression of the nerve caused by swelling or injury of nearby body structures. Shoulder ulnar neuropathy can also occur from surgery – usually when an inexperienced or negligent surgeon performs a procedure.
The most common symptoms of ulnar neuropathy include:
- Abnormal sensations in the fourth or fifth fingers
- Numbness, decreased sensation
- Tingling or burning sensation
- Severe pain
- Weakness of the hand
The pain or numbness caused by ulnar neuropathy may be so severe that it may awaken a patient from their sleep. This condition is also made worse by activities such as tennis or golf. An examination of the hand and wrist can help detect ulnar nerve dysfunction. Severe cases may show a wasting of the hand muscles or a characteristic claw-like deformity. Ulnar neuropathy may be diagnosed through an EMG (a recording of electrical activity in muscles) as well as nerve conduction tests. Other tests to diagnose this condition include blood tests, X-rays and imaging scans.
Ulnar neuropathy is usually treated with a supportive splint or elbow pad to prevent further injury. Corticosteroids may be injected to reduce swelling and pressure on the ulnar nerve. Surgery may be necessary if symptoms worsen or movement gets extremely difficult. Analgesics or other medications may be prescribed for pain control.
