An abdominal hysterectomy is when the uterus, cervix, and possibly one or both fallopian tubes are removed through the lower abdomen. This is the most traditional form of hysterectomy and also the most invasive. The total operation takes up to two hours and patients spend up to six nights in the hospital during recovery. Alternatives to the abdominal hysterectomy include vaginal and laproscopic removal. Approximately 1/3 of American women 60 and younger have had a hysterectomy.
