Intestinal Obstruction at Southeastern PA Good Samaritan Regional

An intestinal obstruction is a blockage of the bowel that prevents the intestinal contents from moving. It can either be a full or partial blockage. This can be caused by hernias, gallstones, tumors, foreign bodies, or other causes. Symptoms of an intestinal obstruction include vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, and breath odor. Diagnosis can be made using barium enemas, CT scans, upper GIs, and abdominal film. To treat the blockage, a nasogastric tube is inserted into the intestine to decompress it. If this doesn't work, surgery may also be used. If left untreated, the tissue in your intestine could die, leading to severe infection and perforation of the intestine.
